Console have a very interesting history of their own and how the came about. First there were arcade games along with commodore 64 & Atari. Later Nintendo dominated the market with Super Nintendo and Game Boy. Now we are entering a new era of video games with PS3, Xbox360 and Nintendo's Wii each offering different feature for their console uniquely. From PS3 taking the console crown of Power horse to xbox360 "Xbox Live" question begs what it is in for Nintendo's next console Wii? Will Nintendo be able to stay in market? And is it even possible for Nintendo to take the lead in next Gen console War from Giants M$ and Sony? I believe all of these are possible for three primary reasons. Both Sony and Microsoft have failed to offer anything new in game experience truly with exception of graphic upgrade from previous consoles. They still use the same mechanism for playing games using the old controller system with thumsticks and buttons. Also both have failed to understand gamers for a console. Gamers are not asking for a $400 gadget to have fun playing games but they want it to be affordable. One of the most important aspects of a console is its software. Xbox was able to utilize on that with games such as Halo and Nintendo DS with NintendoDogs. When looking at all these three points, there is strong chance Nintendo can come out strong.
One the key notes on the Next Gen Console from both Microsoft and Sony the power of their consoles. It seems each one tried to jump on horse wagon as which one has more power. The Sony's head of Playstation has even gone on to say that PS3 can do 120 f/s "to have approximate idea, your eye can see only up to 70 f/s" and also with PS3 world will be transformed into 4D dimension. Believe it or not that is an actual statement from Sony Playstation CEO Ken Kutaragi. This left question as how really games going to be different Playing it while still old mechanism of game play using thumsticks being deployed to play the games. Nintendo tried to make use of this idea. Graphics can make games more realistic but still you live in the polygon world of games. At this point Nintendo was trying to experiment with Gamecube to come up with new way of playing games. The idea was that if you have game where you have to slash your sward, you actually use controller to slash or in matter fact if you have to shoot the ball with Tennis Stick, you use the motion in you hand to feed the ball. It was a hard concept to design the controller for and technology for it never could be provided until three years ago when a Japanese company actually came up with a motion sensor technology to use motion in hands to feed off scroll on screen. Nintendo had the idea and now there was the key to unlock it. Therefore the final design was one of the most awkward controllers for consoles in its history. Many were questioning the accuracy of such a controller and answers were given when one of the reporters in Time Magazine was able to play the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes where in it he actually was slashing with sward using the controller and analog stick. One more thing to keep in mind about Nintendo is their focus on game play which can be seen in DS ("New handled Gaming Machine after Gameboy Advance AKA Dual Screen Nintendo"). DS has proven to be successful and surprisingly has outsold PSP from Sony ("In which has much superior graphic capabilities") 4 to 1 and sold over 16 million world wide. Both PS3 and Xbox have failed to address game play with exception of superior graphics.
Second issue was affordability and the features of the Game Machines. Microsoft seemed to be able to offer good price range for its Xbox360s having Premium package at 399 and Core package at 299 with difference of Premium having a 20 GB HD, headset and wireless controllers all for 100 extra. Sony has gone on the record and recently announced that PS3 will come in two packages one at 499.99 US and 599.00 US. Yes you heard me right that is a price for Sony's PS3 and why? Because you simply get blue ray technology for DVDs and who will utilize that? No one. That is simply a price for playing games. The good alternative is Wii Nintendo's new system for under 299 US or even cheaper for 199.99 US. Nintendo not only is offering consumers a fun and affordable system to play but also they make very good profit on it.
The third issue and biggest and most important of all is the software. Sony has strong repetitions in that area but the rivals are catching up to it. M$ has got very strong games coming out. In other hand Nintendo has surprised many with its new library of games such Red Steels, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princesses and Sadness. Therefore Nintendo won't be BIG N Anymore with Mario only for kids but also for hardcore gamers alike.
To conclude this long article, I should say that there is bright future for Nintendo and looking at the fact will tell how much Nintendo is ahead of its competitors in understanding the Gaming Market and gamers alike by offering a solid system that is fun to play and affordable with many great features such wireless WiFi and retro Nintendo library as well as great games to come and play.
