Xbox 360 Repair Services May No Longer Be A Viable Choice

Recent reports show that the number of Xbox 360 faulty units is up to one third of all units produced. Most of these units suffer of what many define as the "3 red lights of doom." For many of us, the metaphor sounds a bit exaggerated, but for the Xbox 360 users this is more than a metaphor - it's a threat they all fear. The problem is not that the 3 lights of doom mean the sudden death of the console, but that many of the authorized repair centers refuse taking in for repair consoles that display such a problem. This can be explained by the large number of defective units (more than the repair centers can handle) and also by the fact that in certain situations the damage is irreparable.

The 3 lights of doom are caused by a design flaw of the Xbox 360 motherboard that triggers an excessive heating of the system. Although the cause has been identified and there are already some easy fixes that could solve a lot of trouble and money, the repair centers display exorbitant prices. Given the huge number of faulty Xbox 360s, we cannot really blame these subcontractors.

Micromart, one of the repair centers, recently issued a statement to the effect that: "This problem is endemic on the Xbox 360 console and the volume has made this repair non-viable." The company revealed that the cost to repair the 3 red lights of doom was in excess of $200 and even then the problem could not be resolved satisfactorily. Micromart is just one of many Xbox 360 repair centers that no longer accept these units for repair. A solution for the user seems to be farther away than anyone might have imagined.

The Xbox repair centers are still accepting consoles with other problems, but for the unfortunate victims of the 3 red light of doom the repair centers are not always a viable solution. Some of the centers even deny repairing Xbox 360 that are still in warranty (the repair is free for the user, but too costly for the subcontractor).

Imagine the stack of consoles that must be flowing back to Microsoft as the company struggles to find new repair resources. What is surprising is that the Xbox 360 doesn't lose its popularity although in terms of PR and service this is one of Microsoft's faultiest products ever. Obviously the gamers are not easily discouraged.
